Play Without Novaworld: Wippen!

Post  Admin on Tue Sep 27, 2011 10:14 pm

Windows 7/Vista crowd:

Sometimes Novaworld goes down or offline. It seems like there is no way to play coop games.

Luckily, there's Wippen. The Wippen is a VPN Software (Virtual Private Network) that allows you and your buddies to play coop games in LAN mode (provided the game has a LAN mode). Joint Ops and it's subsequant mods such as AW2 or IC4 have a LAN mode, so, therefore Wippen is a solution. Note that a newer VPN software has become my recommendation (see Tunngle article). Either Wippen or Tungle will be fine... its just that Tunngle is newer and more specific to gaming.

Note that the below tutorial is written toward the Windows 7/Vista crowd, but Wippen runs on other Windows versions such as XP. For details, support... ect. etc. see < www.wippen.com>:

1. Wippen uses Jabber as its support system. So, first lets create a Jabber Acct.:

==> https://register.jabber.org/

2. You need the Wippien Client Software:

==> http://www.wippien.com/download.php

Note that Wippen is a 32Bit program, but supports 64Bit. 64Bit users were required download a separate Driver, but since version 2.5.0.0 (April 2011) the 64Bit Driver is incorporated into the install package and a separate download is not needed.

During installation you are going to be required to enter the account information from step number 1. This includes a JID (username) and a password. Make sure the ending portion of the JID (after the @) says @jabber.org and not @wippien.com. Click the Test Account button and if a goes well, you receive a popup message that says "success".

After you installed Wippien, it might auto start... I would shut it down for now. Then check your Network Adapter list. Except Windows 7, Windows Vista, the new adapter will not show up if it's not running. Check out Win7 or Vista's Network Sharing Center.

Look in the left hand pane of the network and sharing window. Click on 'change adapter settings'. Wippen should appear in the list of your connections. Right click on Wippen and then choose 'properties'. In the properties window, scroll until you find "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and make sure it is unchecked. In the same list find "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and make sure that it is indeed checked. At this point "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" is selected (highlighted). Click the 'properties' button (under the list, right hand side).

These are the advanced TCP/IP Settings. Everything should be automatically set, but verify these settings:

Check This => Use the following IP address
IP => 5.4.162.141
Subnet Mask => 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway => 5.0.0.1

Leave everything else as it is and click on the 'advanced' button. Do nothing for most of this window except the 'metric' portion. The automatic metric box should be unchecked and the metric interface = 10. Click 'ok' and 'close'. I recommend a reboot of your Operating System now.

After the reboot you can start Wippien (unless it auto-started). Right click on the Icon on your Desktop or in the star menu under 'all programs' and choose 'run as administator'. You only need to do that the first time you start Wippien.

Joining an AW2 sever is kind of easy. At the top portion of the Wippen window you will see a plus sign ( ). Click it and choose 'add/remove contacts'. I joined THORSAW2. Under Contact ID (JID) I put "THORSAW2" and for the Contact Type I chose . Once added (20 sec.) it was displayed in the Wippen window contact list and it showed "online" status. Then I started AW2 in LAN mode. I did a 'search' and Thors AW2 name came up. You can join other server obviously, but you'll need their JID and .

Hosting is simple also. Startup Wippen and then start your game in LAN mode, host a game and that's all. oh and ahh, remember to give your buddies your JID name and so that they can join.

Windows XP:

Note that the below tutorial is an excerpt from the Wippen author. Note that a newer VPN software has become my recommendation (see Tunngle article). Either Wippen or Tungle will be fine... its just that Tunngle is newer and more specific to gaming.

It is written toward the Windows XP as well as Win7 and Win-Vista.

1. Wippen uses Jabber as its support system. So, first lets create a Jabber Acct.:

==> https://register.jabber.org/

2. You need the Wippien Client Software:

==> http://www.wippien.com/download.php

With 32Bit Systems it will ask you to allow installing its Network Adapter. That is necessary for Wippien to work with VPN. For 64Bit you have to download a separate Driver, which you'll find on the Wippien.com Download page on the left lower side somewhere.

For 64bit systems, including XP, Vista, and Win7, you download the 64bit driver and place in a folder you can access later. With 64bit systems you have to manually install the network adapter after you install the main Wippien files. The shortcut to doing this is to click on start then run hdwwiz.exe which opens up the new hardware wizard. You have to select the manual method of installing hardware and then select network adapters and then have disk. Point to folder where you saved the 64 bit drivers and then follow instructions. On Vista and Win7 you also have to run Wippien at least once as an administrator, by right clicking on the program and selecting "run as administrator". With XP you just have to be logged on as an administrator.

After you installed Wippien, it will autostart usually. Shut it down for now. Then check your Network Adapter list. You should now also have an additional Network Adapter in it. In the window where you see the list of Network adapters you have installed on your PC, click on top on the menu ADVANCED and then go down to ADVANCED SETTINGS.

The window that opens there should show a list of Network Adapters as well. If you have a Hamachi adapter it must be disabled or uninstalled. And the Wippien Adapter has to be on top of that list. If it ain't, you have to manually move it up there. Click the Adapter and the arrow-up symbol right next to it in order to move it to the top of the list. Once that's done, close that window again. Now, in your list of Network adapters, right click the Wippien Network adapter and click go down to PROPERTIES.

In the middle of the window coming up then, there is a list of elements in the middle of that window. With Windows 7 or Windows Vista its called INTERNETPROTOCOL VERSION 4 (TCP/IPv4) and you have to uncheck INTERNETPROTOCOL VERSION 6 (TCP/IPv6). In Windows XP its only called TCP/IP.Mark that by clicking on it once, then go to the button PROPERTIES which should be appeared by then. On the next window that opens go to the lower right corner and click on another button called ADVANCED.

Next thing you'll see is Advanced TCP/IP Settings. 2 areas are inside that. One should be IP ADRESSES and the other STANDARDGATEWAYS. On Standard Gateways you click ADD and add the following IP in the first part.

5.0.0.1

Below that the Metric setting should be set to automatic. After that click on ADD or OK and you should see what you just did in the 2nd area of that previous window.

Now below that there is a field called INTERFACE METRIC. If its set to automatic, uncheck that and enter the following values, depending on your OS.

1500 (WinXP)
10 (Windows 7, Windows Vista)

After that confirm your settings by pressing OK on the lower part of the window.

I recommend a reboot of your Operating System now.

Now, after the reboot you can start Wippien. In case you're running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, start it the first time with Administrator privileges. Right click on the Icon on your Desktop, and click on START AS ADMINISTRATOR. You only need to do that the first time you start Wippien, and only if you have the Operating Systems mentioned above. On Windows XP you can just start it like usually.

Now go to SETTINGS which is located on the lower left corner of the Wippien client window. The first part that is open in the settings is the Identity. So there you can create a new Jabber Account. Jabber is the protocol Wippien uses to connect between users. So you click on I NEED A NEW JABBER ACCOUNT and enter something your friends will recognize for example in the field called JID:

(there are many Jabber servers, but for now lets just stick with wippien.com)

Below that you enter a password for your account. Then click on TEST ACCOUNT. It should work and tell you that its ok. Unless you really find a username that is already used. In that case try some other name. But the JID is always like an Email Adress.

There are other settings as well, most of them you can just keep like it is or change them if you know what they are. Most of them are explained. Those that you dont know just stay away from.

So, basically you're done now. Maybe check one more time if the STANDARDGATEWAY is still set on AUTOMATIC on your Wippien Network adapter and if the INTERFACE METRIC is still how you set it (see above for all infos on that).
