Experiences in F2P Hawken

Post  AKMARK5000 on Thu Mar 13, 2014 2:07 pm

Hawken is F2P, but a open beta game at this point, which means it is still undergoing testing and can be offered as an F2P Early Access game on STEAM.  Unlike many other F2P games, Hawken offers a 4-player cooperative mode in witch the human players team up against computer generated AI.

Graphically, it is a very detailed game and reasonable optimized for the available PC technology.  In general, the graphical and audio settings a very customizable for mid-range computer hardware all the way up to the more competitive upper-range computer hardware... and reasonably so. Hawken runs on all Microsoft operating systems software including XP, Vista, 7 (32Bit or 64Bit OS types).

The controls are minimal, but can be confusing.  If you have tried a flight or ground vehicle simulator, you should be able to learn Hawken game controls rather quickly or at least customize them for your use..

NOTE: F2P or free to play games are usually multiplayer-only, which means that they are dependent upon human players that, for the most part, are sometimes hackers, cheaters, complainers, fickle and childish.  These games also promote the purchase of DLCs (downloadable content) with real-world currency such as U.S. Dollars.  For the most part though, F2P games are actually free to download and play the basic game.

STEAMS "early access,"  are sometimes F2P and free betas.  They are offered as an honest means to support continued game development, but other times these terms are just an excuse to make a quick buck off incomplete or poorly made games... so, beware... just my opinion.

Despite what other posts have said, it is possible to skip right to the Hawken Log-in screen.  As of March 2014 the below works, but may change since Hawken is still in development. Simply edit the DefaultEngine.ini located in the game folder.

Example Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Hawken\HawkenGame\Config

1. Make a backup copy of the exsisting DefaultEngine.in incase it is needed later.

2. Open the DefaultEngine.ini and Look for the following lines:
____________________________________________________________________________________
[FullScreenMovie]
bForceNoMovies=FALSE
bShouldStopMovieAtEndOfLoadMap=TRUE

; The UE3_logo is recommended be included in the startup movie list
;+StartupMovies=UE3_logo
+StartupMovies=Splash_legal
+StartupMovies=Splash_nVidia
+StartupMovies=Splash_meteor
+StartupMovies=Spash_adhesive
+StartupMovies=Splash_hawken

; The loading movie (or any other movie which loops and does not contain logos) must be the last entry
; in the StartupMovies list, as the engine will skip the last movie if the game is finished initializing
; by the time we play the logo movies (which will always be the case)
+StartupMovies=Splash_loading

; Here we define which movies we want to allow the user to skip.
; MUST NOT CONTAIN THE LAST MOVIE FROM THE StartupMovies list.
;+SkippableMovies=UE3_logo
+SkippableMovies=Splash_nVidia
+SkippableMovies=Splash_meteor
+SkippableMovies=Spash_adhesive
+SkippableMovies=Splash_hawken
____________________________________________________________________________________

3. Modify the above lines to look like the below:
____________________________________________________________________________________
[FullScreenMovie]
bForceNoMovies=FALSE
bShouldStopMovieAtEndOfLoadMap=TRUE

; The UE3_logo is recommended be included in the startup movie list
;+SkippableMovies=UE3_logo
+SkippableMovies=Splash_legal
+SkippableMovies=Splash_nVidia
+SkippableMovies=Splash_meteor
+SkippableMovies=Spash_adhesive
+SkippableMovies=Splash_hawken

; The loading movie (or any other movie which loops and does not contain logos) must be the last entry
; in the StartupMovies list, as the engine will skip the last movie if the game is finished initializing
; by the time we play the logo movies (which will always be the case)
+StartupMovies=Splash_loading

; Here we define which movies we want to allow the user to skip.
; MUST NOT CONTAIN THE LAST MOVIE FROM THE StartupMovies list.
;+SkippableMovies=UE3_logo
+SkippableMovies=Splash_nVidia
+SkippableMovies=Splash_meteor
+SkippableMovies=Spash_adhesive
+SkippableMovies=Splash_hawken
____________________________________________________________________________________

All that eliminates ALL introductory screens and logos and movie.

Modifying the standard in-game field of view beyond 90 is possible via the HawkenEngine.ini using any text editor.

Location: C:\Users\[Your user]\Documents\My Games\Hawken\HawkenGame\Config\HawkenEngine.ini

Look for the line: “AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainXFOV” and change the X after “AspectRatio_Maintain” to a Y so that it looks like this:

==> AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainYFOV

This will allow you to push your FOV beyond the normal value.

Next, find “FOVangle” in the same .ini file and modify it to your desired FOV. Keep in mind that the value you set here will not be the only factor that changes your FOV. In game settings also modify the FOV. If both the .ini FOV and in-game FOV are set to 90, you’ll be at 120. The .ini FOV value and the in-game FOV value are independent of one another, and each value has an effect on your overall FOV.

My current settings are as follows:

.ini FOVangle = 75

In-game FOV = 85

Modify each value and adjust the FOV to your preference. It is usually beneficial to have a higher FOV, as this will increase the amount you can see on your screen. It does restrict vertical view and makes on-screen targets smaller, however.
Camera FOV modifications in repair state, death cam, and turret mode...

Open HawkenCamera.ini in a text editor.
File path: C:\Users\[Your user]\Documents\My Games\Hawken\HawkenGame\Config\HawkenCamera.ini

Find the following sections and update the FOVAngle to your desired FOV (I used 105 here):

[HawkenGame.HawkenPawnCameraMode]
FOVAngle=105

[HawkenGame.HawkenCameraMode_Death]
FOVAngle=105

[HawkenGame.HawkenCameraMode_Ragdoll]
FOVAngle=105

[HawkenGame.HawkenCameraMode_DemoSpec]
FOVAngle=105

In the HawkenSystemSettings.ini any line with "fog" or "grain" is set to "false" (no quotes).
