Button Mashing Alternative

Post  AKMARK5000 on Tue Oct 29, 2013 10:54 am

Ever play a PC FPS game that requires you to repeatedly press a certain key in several or more rapid repetitions.  I have and the official name for the process is called "button mashing."  At best its annoying, but sometimes it hampers game flow or even prevents advancement... not to mention premature keyboard damage and possible finger arthritis in the future.

Games are just not enjoyable when you cannot advance in the game. Resorting to game cheats and save game files found throughout the web is a work-around, but ruins the entire game experience.  Who likes spending good money on a game to skip over parts of it, correct?

A few games are still developed with the button mashing feature.  One game in particular was especially inundated with button mashing.  In short, I found a way around the button mashing with a program called "auto-key."

Auto-Key allowed me to assign a single key that, when pressed one time, would repeat five times rapidly and automatically...  no more button mashing Hassle! Here's a video that describes the situation in detail.

Obviously, the program can be utilized for much more than what I described in the opening paragraphs.  You can download the free program and read all about it at the programs website.

Sometimes the Auto-key program described in the previous article just does not work for certain games.. especially ones that requiring direct input.  Anyway, here is an alternate program.

Download ==> http://ul.to/opszo1lm  (or link page = http://glovepie.org/lpghjkwer.php)

Specific Example Explanation ==> http://ergohacks.com/replace-button-mashing-in-tomb-raider-with-one-button-press/comment-page-1/

Although the explanation link deals with a specific game, Tomb Reider, the information can be applied to almost any game.  I used the code with Dead Space 3, which required direct input and the Auto-key program could not do the job.

Originally, the X key is used, but I changed it... copy and paste the script below into GlovePIE and run it in the background. If you hold the X key on the keyboard, it will repeatedly hit E twice every second until you release the key.  Just pressing the X on the keyboard once will mash it a dozen or so times, which is often long enough to pass the button mashing Quick Time Event requiring you to keep pressing E.

Proof:  Set it up and give it a try in the Windows Notepad.

Original Code (for “x” key):

var.rate = 12 Hz
if KeepDown(key.x,5)
key.e = true
wait 0.50/var.rate
key.e = false
wait 0.50/var.rate
end if

My Replacement Code (for “e” key):

var.rate = 12 Hz
if KeepDown(key.e,10)
key.e = true
wait 0.50/var.rate
key.e = false
wait 0.50/var.rate
end if
